In October 1985 Adelaide hosted the first Australian Grand Prix. Adelaide won the right to host race after gaining local government funding. The street circuit was set up around Victoria Park Race Course to the east of the city. The first Adelaide Grand Prix was won by Keke Rosberg for Williams. The circuit gained a reputation for being a quick one, with long straights and tight bends. The Australian Grand Prix relocated to Melbourne in 1996.
