An emphasis on human interest stories and popular entertainment is evident in the front page articles and photographs of this edition of The Sunday Mail. Adelaide’s annual Christmas Pageant was first held in 1933, sponsored by department store John Martin’s led by Sir Edward Hayward as a goodwill gesture during the Great Depression years. The pageant continues to be held, with sponsorship from local credit unions. It is the largest event of its kind in the world.
